A Vibrant City Wedding in Downtown Detroit at Shinola Hotel & Union Assembly

There’s something magnetic about a wedding in Downtown Detroit, especially when it’s held at Shinola Hotel. The architecture, the energy, the way the city feels alive around you – you can’t beat it. But what I loved most about Hannah and Adam’s summer wedding downtown wasn’t just the skyline views or the vibrant design. It was how intentionally they built a day that felt completely, unapologetically theirs.

Hannah and Adam’s celebration at the Shinola Hotel and Union Assembly was proof that you can design a wedding around what matters most to you, while still creating an unforgettable experience for your guests. So if you’re planning a Downtown Detroit wedding and wondering whether you have to follow a traditional run of events, let this be your inspiration and reminder that you don’t.

A Private Balcony Ceremony at Shinola Hotel

Instead of hosting a large ceremony, Hannah and Adam chose something more personal: an intimate vow exchange on the balcony of their suite, overlooking the city. Only their immediate families were present, with Adam’s grandmother officiating. This detail that made the entire moment feel sacred and generational.

There was no aisle lined with chairs. No large audience. Just the people who shaped them, the city behind them, and the quiet emotion of a ceremony that felt like it belonged solely to them.

From a planning perspective, this is one of the most beautiful things about getting married in Downtown Detroit. Venues like Shinola Hotel offer architectural character and private spaces that allow you to scale your ceremony up or down. And as a Detroit wedding photographer, Shinola is one of my favorites to photograph. Whether you want a grand ballroom reception or an intimate ceremony such as this, you have options.

Turning the City Into the Celebration

Following suit, Hannah and Adam didn’t have a traditional wedding party either. Instead, they invited their closest friends to join them post ceremony, with the girls dressing as Hannah’s “something blue.” After their private ceremony, we met up with everyone for photos and celebratory drinks before we paraded through the streets of Detroit together.

And yes — we quite literally paraded.

This is what I mean when I say you can do your Downtown Detroit wedding your way. The city becomes part of the experience. The movement from hotel to The Skip for drinks to reception venue, it all turns into a story. Strangers cheered and asked to take photos with the couple. The energy built. And by the time we arrived at Union Assembly, it felt like the entire city had celebrated with them.

From a photography perspective, this type of timeline creates dynamic, editorial imagery layered with authentic emotion. Detroit’s historic buildings, bold textures, and skyline views add depth without overpowering the couple. When you lean into the environment instead of resisting it, your wedding photos feel alive.

A Reception Designed for Celebration (and City Views)

For their reception, Hannah and Adam wanted three things: Downtown Detroit views, Indoor/outdoor flexibility, and a terrace for dancing. Union Assembly gave them exactly that.

They intentionally chose bold colors that complemented the city’s vibrancy rather than soft, muted tones. The result felt modern, energetic, and completely aligned with the space. Guests flowed between indoor and terrace spaces, drinks in hand, soaking in the city views as the celebration unfolded.

This wedding also carried extra meaning for their planner, Caitlin of Bunny & June Events. As Hannah’s older sister, this was the biggest event of the year for her — and she poured her heart into every detail. It was a masterclass in thoughtful design meeting personal storytelling. And getting to photograph such a special day for Caitlin was truly my pleasure.

Why I Love Photographing Downtown Detroit Weddings Like This

There’s something about Downtown Detroit weddings that always makes the day feel a little extra electric. The energy of the city brings a kind of excitement that you just can’t replicate anywhere else.

One of my favorite parts is how the city itself seems to celebrate with you. As we walk through the streets, people honk, cheer, and shout congratulations. Suddenly the couple feels like celebrities for the day, and those spontaneous reactions add such a joyful, unscripted layer to the day.

Detroit also has this incredible way of surprising you visually. Around nearly every corner there’s another beautiful backdrop — historic architecture, glowing storefronts, textured alleyways, or a skyline view that feels cinematic. It means we can move through the city naturally and capture images that feel both editorial and full of life.

That mix of movement, atmosphere, and genuine excitement is what makes photographing weddings here so special to me. The city becomes part of the story, and every turn brings a new moment waiting to unfold.

An unforgettable day indeed.

ABOUT MIKAYLA

The daughter of a musician and a television producer, art and creation is in my blood

My love for photography started when I was seven, on a family trip to Hawaii. My parents gave me two disposable cameras, and within hours, I had already filled one with photos of everything around me. That’s where it all began—I wanted to remember our little piece of Maui exactly how it was, and that approach to life has never left me.
